The Great North American Eclipse will take place on April 8, 2024, and Arkansas will be the perfect place to experience this historic event. From southwest to northeast, two-thirds of Arkansas will be in the path of totality. Mena, Hot Springs, Little Rock, and Jonesboro are among the cities it passes through.
There was a partial total solar eclipse in Arkansas in 2017, the last time a total solar eclipse occurred in North America. This is a historic occasion, so what makes it so special?
The state of Arkansas has only experienced two total eclipses in its history. Two years after Arkansas became the 25th U.S. state, one took place in 1834 when Arkansas was still Arkansas Territory. In 1918, there was a second one.
The Arkansas Natural Sky Association has created a website, ar-eclipse.info, to provide more information about this history. A useful table on the website lists the phase times and durations of the eclipse for Arkansas areas. Cities and towns are listed in the first table, followed by Arkansas State Parks, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sites, college stadiums, and Buffalo National River.
