What to Expect
Downtown Mena and the nearby scenic drive and state park make a deliciously romantic weekend. Rent a convertible and take in the foliage together, and spend a romantic night in the lodge at Queen Wilhelmina State Park. Take your time picking out souvenirs at the shops downtown and don’t miss a meal at The Ouachita, followed by an ice cream date at Coney Q!
Start Your Adventure
Grab a coffee at The Ouachitas, a sandwich at American Artisans, a burger and brew at trendy The Ouachitas, and a cozy ice cream at Coney Q. Mena has a surprising number of delicious dining options for a small town; you could spend a whole weekend just sampling them all! Thankfully, they’re all within walking distance, so you can try as many as you like.
Mena has an array of adorable shops so absolutely anyone can find something they love! Buy your date an outfit at The Fair Lady Boutique, a piece of antique jewelry at Old Bank Antiques (or a local postcard!), or a health-conscious treat from Farm House Herbs and Health Food. Don’t miss out on locally hand dyed yarn and a friendly shop dog at Rich Mountain Fiber!
Stroll Janssen Park after enjoying downtown Mena! There are gorgeous old growth trees, a pond with floating swans, and a romantic bridge to smooch on. It’s a quick walk from the main road, and it offers a lovely respite from the busier downtown. Walk off that ice cream with a romantic stroll amidst the park.
The Talimena Scenic Drive is one of the most stunning fall drives I’ve ever seen and would make a perfect spot for a date. There are many pull-offs and stops along the way to enjoy the foliage, and they make an incredible place to watch the sunset. Pack a romantic picnic and wine and plan on watching the sunset at one of the prettiest places in the Southeast United States. Bring a blanket to cozy up in!
The Rich Mountain Lookout Tower offers interesting history nestled amidst gorgeous fall foliage. Take a picnic lunch up there and enjoy the surroundings. or just make it a quick stop. The road to the tower is one of the prettiest spots for overhanging fall foliage on the whole byway, and it’s definitely worth a dedicated stop.
Ouachita National Recreation Trail, United States
Outdoorsy couples will love the chance to get some exercise on a section of Ouachita National Recreation Trail! This trail offers almost 200 miles of options, or you can hike a short section as a day hike. Look up the trail map for trailhead information and trail conditions. Grab a to go six pack from The Ouachitas for a romantic trail beer to celebrate!
Queen Wilhelmina State Park offers stunning foliage views and many different ways to enjoy a romantic time together. Ride the mini train around the park or hold hands and hike one of the many trails to gorgeous overlooks. Camp in a tent or RV underneath golden trees or stay in the historic lodge for more creature comforts. Catch the stars after dark; they’re brilliant without much light pollution around!
