Leaf Peeping on the Talimena

The Talimena Scenic Drive is one of the most stunning fall drives I’ve ever seen. There are many pull-offs and stops along the way to enjoy the foliage, and they make an incredible place to watch the sun set. One of the best parts of this drive is that there’s amost no traffic! A real treat compared to some other scenic drives.

Ouachita National Recreation Trail, United States

The Ouachita National Recreation Trail is 192 miles long and offers both through hiking options and day hike options. It intersects with the Talimena Scenic Drive in several locations if you want to catch it at any of these places, or you can start the trail closer to town. Check the trail map for trailheads and trail conditions.

The Rich Mountain Lookout Tower offers interesting history nestled amidst gorgeous fall foliage. Take a picnic lunch up there and enjoy the surroundings, or just make it a quick stop. The road to the tower is one of the prettiest spots for overhanging fall foliage on the whole byway, and it’s definitely worth a dedicated stop.

Queen Wilhelmina State Park offers stunning foliage views and many different ways to enjoy them. Ride the mini train around the park or hike one of the many trails to gorgeous overlooks. Camp in a tent or RV underneath golden trees or stay in the historic lodge for more creature comforts. Glorious foliage is everywhere you look.
